Governor Walz Opens Application Process to Select New Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Commerce

1/7/2021 11:45:08 AM

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Today, Governor Tim Walz announced an application process to select a new Commissioner to lead the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

The Department of Commerce is the state’s consumer protection agency. Commerce oversees more than 20 regulated industries, including insurance, financial institutions, energy, real estate, and telecommunications, investigates consumer complaints on fraud, and ensures the accuracy of commercial and grocery store scales and gasoline pumps across the state.

“The next Commissioner of the Department of Commerce will build on the strong foundation of Commissioner Steve Kelley’s work to help Minnesotans live resiliently and prosperously and ensure a fair marketplace where our businesses can thrive,” said Governor Walz. “I am grateful for the dedicated public servants who will step forward and apply to lead.”

“In these unprecedented circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Commerce commissioner plays a critical role in protecting Minnesota consumers, whether they’re navigating health insurance claims or concerned about fraud,” said Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. “As we continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, we will look for a leader who is committed to prioritizing the needs of Minnesota children, families, and small businesses.”

An individual wishing to apply should submit a cover letter and resume to gov.appointments@state.mn.us. Application materials are due by January 14 and should be addressed to Governor Tim Walz.

Applicants can contact Madelyn Nelson at Madelyn.Nelson@state.mn.us, 651-368-3080 with questions about the application process or to request reasonable accommodations.
