[ST. PAUL, MN] - Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has authorized the Minnesota National Guard to provide emergency relief services for stranded motorists in tonight’s winter storm.
Currently, the Minnesota National Guard is activated in Renville and Martin counties. Additional support will be provided in other parts of the state if needed.
Heavy snow and strong winds have stranded motorists in Renville County, where two major highways are closed due to blizzard conditions. The Minnesota National Guard will open the Armory in Olivia to be used as a temporary shelter. Additionally, the Minnesota National Guard’s small unit support vehicle (SUSV) will be used to help rescue stranded motorists in Martin County, and the Fairmont Armory will also be opened for stranded motorists.
