[ST. PAUL, MN] – Today, Governor Tim Walz announced an application process to select a new adjutant general to lead the Minnesota National Guard. The process follows the recent announcement that Adjutant General Major General Jon A. Jensen has been nominated to serve as the next Director of the Army National Guard at the National Guard Bureau, subject to confirmation by the United States Senate.
“In recent months, the Minnesota National Guard has been called to serve our state in unprecedented ways,” said Governor Walz. “As a 24-year veteran of the Minnesota National Guard, I understand the critical nature of the National Guard in the state’s response to emergency situations. The Adjutant General provides vital leadership to ensure success and safety in these missions.”
As the Minnesota National Guard continues to support missions abroad, they have also been mobilized for domestic missions here in Minnesota. Since March, hundreds of guardsmen have served in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing logistics, planning, and transportation missions, as well as being integrated into the state’s testing response. In recent weeks, thousands of members of the Minnesota National Guard were mobilized in response to the civil unrest following the tragic death of George Floyd.
“In these uncertain times, it is critical that we have steady, capable leadership in our Minnesota National Guard,” said Governor Walz. “I look forward to reviewing the applications of those who have raised their hand to serve our state.”
The Governor is Commander-in-Chief of the Minnesota National Guard, and the Adjutant General is appointed by the Governor to a seven-year term. An individual wishing to apply may request the application information by contacting Madelyn Nelson at Madelyn.Nelson@state.mn.us. Application materials should be addressed to Governor Tim Walz. Application materials are due by Sunday, June 21st at 11:59pm.
