[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz today issued Executive Order 22-02, authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to provide public safety assistance. The Governor’s action comes after the request of the City of Saint Paul for state assistance related to the federal civil rights trial of the three former Minneapolis police officers involved in the death of George Floyd. This order also means that the National Guard will be prepared should Minneapolis request additional public safety support following the death of Amir Locke.
Executive Order 22-02 provides the ability for the Minnesota National Guard to assist local law enforcement if requested. This order does not direct the Minnesota National Guard to assume posts throughout the Twin Cities at this time. The state will provide additional law enforcement resources, including the Minnesota State Patrol, if a coordinated response to aid local law enforcement is necessary.
“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of Minnesotans, and at the request of the City of Saint Paul, I have authorized the Minnesota National Guard to make preparations to assist local law enforcement agencies as needed,” said Governor Walz. “The National Guard will be available to help keep the peace, ensure public safety, and allow for peaceful demonstrations.”
As part of ongoing public safety planning, and to ensure optimal readiness in the case of changes to the public safety environment, the Mayor of Saint Paul has requested state assistance, including the Minnesota National Guard. Executive Order 22-02 provides access to an additional tool that can include preparation and planning in support of local and state law enforcement and emergency management agencies, as well as the support of local law enforcement efforts to protect life and property, ensure public safety, and protect freedom of speech by allowing for peaceful demonstrations.
Executive Order 22-02 is effective immediately.
