PAUL, MN – In response to a request for assistance in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, Governor Tim Walz today authorized a team of 13 Minnesota emergency management professionals to go to Florida as that state prepares for the intensifying storm.
Florida requested several Type III All-Hazard Incident Management Teams from around the country to help with response and recovery efforts. The request was made through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC).
“Minnesotans take pride in helping our neighbors in need, and it’s my honor to answer Florida’s call for assistance,” said Governor Tim Walz. “My thoughts are with the people of Florida as they work to mitigate the effects of Hurricane Dorian and keep their communities safe through the storm.”
The Minnesota All Hazards Incident Management Team (AHIMT) will be deployed to Florida from September 1-15 and includes representatives from the following agencies:
Each member of the team has completed training in their respective disciplines and many are certified as Minnesota Emergency Managers with previous local, state and national deployment experience.

The team’s mission and deployment location will be determined by the Florida Emergency Management agency, but will likely involve helping local governments with coordinating response and recovery operations.
Type III All-Hazard Incident Management Teams
A Type III AHIMT is a multi-agency team used for extended incidents. It is formed and managed at the local, state or tribal level and includes a designated team of trained personnel from different departments, organizations, agencies and jurisdictions. They are deployed as a team of 10-20 trained personnel, representing multiple disciplines who manage major or complex incidents requiring a significant number of local, state or tribal resources.

About EMAC
EMAC is a mutual aid agreement between all 50 states. A requesting state asks for resources (people, equipment, etc.) based on their needs. Agencies in other states with those resources are able to respond to a request, but there is no obligation to participate. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management division coordinates the state’s EMAC requests.
Additional information about EMAC is available at https://www.emacweb.org/.
