Governor Tim Walz Announces Upcoming Knee Surgery

On Thursday, Governor will temporarily transfer power to the Lieutenant Governor while he is under general anesthetic for the minor procedure

6/17/2019 4:14:36 PM

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz today announced he will have surgery on his left knee on Thursday for a medial meniscus tear—an injury common for runners. While he is under general anesthetic, he will transfer the power and duties of the Office of the Governor to Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. Per state statute, the Governor sent a letter today to House Speaker Melissa Hortman and President of the Senate Jeremy Miller declaring the upcoming transfer of power. The transfer of power will start at 12:30pm on Thursday, when the Governor enters surgery and be in effect until he sends the legislative leaders a written declaration that he is again able to discharge his duties.

“After years of running, this minor surgery will help ensure I can hit the pavement again soon,” Governor Walz said. “I expect a smooth surgery and I have full confidence in Lieutenant Governor Flanagan to temporarily hold the power of the office while I am under anesthesia.”

The Governor’s surgery, which is called a knee orthoscopy, will take place at 12:30pm on Thursday. He will return home later that day to recuperate, and will begin physical therapy shortly thereafter. The Governor is expected back in the office on Monday and should return to full physical capacity in less than six weeks. He will have the same procedure on his right knee sometime in the near future.

The Governor’s letter to Speaker Hortman and President of the Senate Jeremy Miller is attached, and the text is available below.

Dear President Miller and Speaker Hortman:

On Thursday, June 20, 2019, I will undergo surgery under a general anesthetic. Under Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 4.06, the powers of the Office of Governor may be transferred to the Lieutenant Governor on a temporary basis. Although I am confident in my full and speedy recovery, I believe it is appropriate to exercise diligence and follow the appropriate processes prescribed in law.

Accordingly, as provided in Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 4.06(c), I declare that on Thursday, June 20, 2019, beginning at 12:30 p.m., while I am under general anesthetic, I will temporarily be unable to discharge the powers and duties of the Office of Governor.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2019, the powers and duties of the Office of Governor will be discharged by Lieutenant Governor Flanagan, until I transmit to you a written declaration that I am again able to discharge my powers and duties.

Sincerely,

Tim Walz

 Governor
