[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed the month of February as “Black History Month” in Minnesota. The proclamation recognizes the history and contributions of African American people in the development of American democracy.

“We must acknowledge and pay tribute to the generations of individuals who struggled with adversity, risked their lives for justice, fought a fight that at times seemed impossible to win, and continue to fight for equality and the American Dream,” reads Governor Walz’s proclamation. “As a state, we can continue to work together to guarantee equal opportunity for all individuals.”

In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard Scholar, established the observance of African American History. Originally designated as a week to honor and acknowledge the contributions, achievements, and involvement of African American people in the development of American democracy, the commemoration was expanded and renamed in 1976 to the current Black History Month. The history of the nation’s African American neighbors, friends, and community leaders, is what shapes us as a state and nation. The month of February serves to honor the many heroes, leaders, and individuals that have and continue to contribute to the collective efforts for freedom and justice for all.
