Review Identification (ID) card

To get an ID card, a person must apply by showing documents that prove their full name and date of birth and pay the required fee. 
'If a person is under 21 years old, the card is marked “Under-21” and is valid until they turn 21. Under-21 cards are laid out vertically.

Children under age 18 are not required to provide ID when traveling with a companion within the United States*

The companion will need acceptable ID.

Types of ID cards

  • Standard ID: Basic identification card acceptable documents
  • Real ID: Compliant with federal regulations for air travel and entering certain federal facilities.
  • Enhanced ID: Allows land and sea border crossings from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries.

How to apply


Visit an office to apply for or renew an ID card. You must present one of the following:  

  • Current Minnesota driver’s license, ID card or instruction permit.
  • Minnesota license, ID card or permit with photograph, that has been expired for five years or less.
  • Minnesota license, ID card or permit with no photograph, that is current or expired for one year or less.

A primary document must include a person's full name and the month, day and year of their birth. 

If a person cannot provide one of these documents, they must present proof documents for the type of card they are applying for. A person request an exception if they do not have proper documents for a Standard or REAL ID. 

Documents will not be accepted if laminated or otherwise altered. 
 
Pay the required fee for your ID card. A person can apply for a reduced fee or a free ID card if they are a youth experiencing homelessness.

What if ID card is lost or need to change information


 A person will need to apply for a duplicate license if their current ID card is lost, damaged or destroyed. For a duplicate ID card, the photo and signature on file will be used on their replacement card.  

 A person may also apply for a duplicate ID card if they have changed their name or address. They will need to provide two proofs of their new address if they hold a REAL ID. 

 A person will apply for a renewal if their card expires in the next 30 days. Our system will default to a renewal nine months before their expiration.  


Show that name has changed

Minnesota law requires that you apply for a new ID card within 30 days of legally changing your name. For a name change, one of the following is necessary: 

  • A certified marriage certificate.
  • A certified divorce decree or dissolution of marriage.
  • A certified court order.

The document must show the before and after name change. A person must provide documentation of name changes, starting from the name listed on their primary document to their current name. 

A person may request an exception if they do not have proper documents to apply for a Standard or REAL ID.

Requirements for the photo on ID card 


Minnesota driver's license, ID or permit must have a full-face image. A person may be asked to remove eyeglasses. 

Religious head coverings are acceptable as long as they do not cover face. Find more information about acceptable head coverings
Request an exemption if a person has a religious objection with the identification card image requirements.

Social Security Number 

A person is required to provide their Social Security number on the application form if they are eligible for one.

If they are not eligible for a Social Security number, they must say that on the application form. They may need to supply additional documents. 

A Social Security number is not located on or embedded in a Minnesota driver's license, ID or permit. It is private information that is secured on the driver’s license information system and accessible only to those lawfully authorized to access it.

Period of Issuance: ID cards always expire on the applicant's birthday and must be renewed every four years; age 65 and older are valid for life.
