CDL endorsements and restrictions
Testing and fees are required to add endorsements or remove restrictions from your commercial driver’s license (CDL).
To upgrade your driver’s license with an endorsement, you must pass a written test for each endorsement.
To renew a hazmat or school bus endorsement, you need to retake the written test. Other endorsements do not require a written test on renewal.
Eligible endorsements for each class
Class A license can hold one or more of the following endorsements
Hazardous materials (H)
Passenger (P)
School bus (S) - must be accompanied by a Passenger endorsement
Tank vehicle (N)
Tanker and hazardous materials (X)
Double/triples (T)
Class B license can hold one or more of the following endorsements
Hazardous materials (H)
Passenger (P)
School bus (S) - must be accompanied by a Passenger endorsement
Tank vehicle (N)
Tanker and hazardous materials (X)
Class C license must hold one or more of the following endorsements
Hazardous materials (H)
Passenger (P)
School bus (S) - Optional endorsement - must be accompanied by a Passenger endorsement
How to obtain each endorsement
To add endorsements to an existing CDL, you must pass the appropriate tests and apply for a duplicate license.
Adding school bus or passenger endorsements requires a road test in an appropriate vehicle.
A person has 30 days after becoming a Minnesota resident to transfer your CDL from another state.
Examination fee for each endorsement: $2.50
School Bus physical processing fee- original and renewal application: $4
Retesting fee the third and subsequent written test (after failing first two): $10
Retesting fee the third and subsequent road test (after failing first two): $20

P = no passenger in CMV bus (CLP)
V = FMCSA waiver
W = buses less than 24 passenger capacity
X = no cargo in CMV tank vehicle (CLP)
Z = air over hydraulic brake system only
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
CDL Class A
Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) allows you to drive a class A vehicle. It is valid for four years and can be
renewed.
CDL Class B
Class B driver’s commercial driver's license (CDL) allows you to drive a class B vehicle. It is valid for four years and can be renewed.
CDL Class C
Class C commercial driver’s license (CDL) allows you to drive a class C vehicle. It is valid for four years and can be renewed.

Commercial driver's licenses always expire on the applicant's birthday and must be renewed every four years once they have reached the age of 21. Knowledge test for Hazardous Materials is required at time of license renewal
