DNR policy is to regulate the construction and enlargement of dams, as well as the repair, alteration, maintenance, operation, transfer of ownership and abandonment in such a manner as to best provide for public health, safety and welfare.

A permit from the U.S. Corps of Engineers may be needed for projects requiring a DNR permit for work in public waters.
