Continuing Education

FOR PRACTITIONERS

To renew or reactivate an operator or salon manager license through the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology, 8 total hours of continuing education are required. Hours are to be broken down by subject matter as follows: 

4-hour Core continuing education course must include:

  • 1 hour of laws and rules
  • 3 hours of health, safety, and infection control standards

4-hour Professional Practice continuing education course. Course subject matter may include any of the following:

  • Product chemistry and chemistry interaction
  • Proper use of machines and instruments
  • Business management and human relations
  • Techniques relevant to the type of license held

FOR INSTRUCTORS

All instructor continuing education courses must be pre-approved by the Board.*  To renew an instructor license, 45 hours of continuing education are required:
  • 30 hours of teaching-methodology courses
  • 15 hours of clinical practice courses
*Approval Exceptions - Post-secondary courses on teaching methods or clinical practice offered by higher education institutions not licensed by the Board (such as schools in the MNSCU system, University of Minnesota system, or other post-secondary schools licensed by the MN Office of Higher Education) may qualify for continuing education credit for board-licensed instructors without additional board-approval. Please contact the Board office for additional information.
 

INSTRUCTOR CE COURSE LISTS

FOR PROVIDERS

Whether you are a seasoned course provider already or interested in learning how to become one, we are here to assist you.

Step 1

Ensure that you qualify to become a Practitioner or Instructor CE Provider. If so, complete the appropriate application. 

  • Practitioner Providers* may be a Licensed Cosmetology School, Licensed Salon, Post-Secondary Institution or MN Board Recognized Professional Association
  • Instructor Providers may be a Licensed Cosmetology School, Licensed Salon, Post-Secondary Institution, MN Board Recognized Professional Association or Subject Matter Expert.

Step 2

Complete the application. After you apply you will receive an email with instructions on how to submit the $150 fee.

Step 3

Once your complete application and payment are received, if deemed eligible, you will receive an approval email with your provider number and log-in information. Then you may begin to submit courses for approval.

*Important: The Core CE course cannot be offered by salons. Salons must offer Professional Practice CE courses in person, not online. Non-cosmetology post-secondary institutions may not offer Professional Practice CE courses.
