The Internet is dramatically changing the way we access information. In order for everyone to have equal access to websites, the content must adhere to certain standards and guidelines. On this page you will find basic information about Section 508 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) plus links to each site so you can learn more.
In 1998 Congress amended the U.S. Rehabilitation Act requiring Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology (E&IT) accessible to people with disabilities. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. '794 d) Federal agencies must provide employees and members of the public with disabilities access to information that is comparable to access available to others.
Organizations, businesses, and agencies that do not fall under Section 508 often use these standards to voluntarily increase the accessibility of their electronic and information technology.
Visit the Section 508 website to learn more about these standards and how to implement them to increase E&IT accessibility.
