Why Caption Videos In-House?

At the beginning of the course, you were encouraged to answer a series of pre-assessment questions to help you determine how to best address your captioning needs. If you've decided to caption at least some of your videos in-house, it is most likely for a combination of two general reasons: your presentation environment and available resources. Let's take a quick look at both parameters:

Presentation Environment

This encompasses a range of factors including:

  • Your organization's communications policies and goals (e.g., brand or image, the tone you intend to convey, reason for videos)
  • Staff culture and technical savvy
  • Video frequency and length
  • Video format (informal vs formal)
  • Intended audience
  • Audio quality and/or availability of a transcript

Available Resources

This can involve factors such as:

  • Production processes (whether you do any work in-house or rely on outside services)
  • Cost-effective use of staff time (see Module 5 for typical vendor pricing models)
  • Desire to build this skill set among staff
  • Budget limitations
