Hanukkah in December
Our workplace welcomes all people. To promote greater understanding, we would like to share information with you about an upcoming holiday for people who follow Jewish Culture and Heritage.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrating the restoration of Jewish worship at the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE. Hanukkah this year will be celebrated from December 25, 2024 to January 2, 2025.
During Hanukkah, Jews all over the world will light their menorahs, one candle for each day of the eight-day celebration, to remember that no matter how dark things get, the light will return. Hanukkah reminds us of the magic in every-day life.
These are a few of the traditions your Jewish coworkers might follow during Hanukkah:
- Lighting the Menorah: Each night, a candle is added to the menorah, symbolizing the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days.
- Spinning the Dreidel: A four-sided top is spun in a traditional game, representing the phrase "A great miracle happened there."
- Eating Fried Foods: Latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts) are enjoyed, symbolizing the oil.
Hanukkah celebrates the victory of light over darkness. It is a time for family, faith, and reflection, centered around the themes of freedom, resilience, and hope.
