The Permanent Office Exploration Project
Minnesota’s Tribal State Relations Office is the culmination and result of Native advocacy that ushered the way forward. A permanent office would be the fifth link in an over 60-year-long chain of evolving government-to-government relationships.
- Indian Affairs Commission (1963-1976)
- Indian Affairs Intertribal Board (1976-1983)
- Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (1983 to Present)
- Tribal State Relations Office in the Governor’s Office (2020)
- Permanent Tribal State Relations Office (Future)
When Governor Walz completes his final term, the office will no longer stand. To implement a permanent change in the government’s structure, the TSREP will rely on a variety of knowledge bases across the country. After preparing a report regarding its findings and recommendations and sharing it with stakeholders for review, the TSREP will write and propose legislation regarding fiscal impact and office structure and responsibility to Minnesota’s State Congress.
