Renewal for MN LMFTs with a 12/31/2025 expiration date is open.

Renewal for MN LMFT Licenses is Open

Renewal Fee:  $175.00

  • Renew Online. You will be required to log in via the secure website with a Username and Password. Use the “Forgot Username/Password” link if you do not remember your log in credentials.  Board staff do not have access to your password.
  • If you have never used the Board’s online system, click on “Register to Access Site.” This account will be used for all future online activity, so maintain a copy of your login information.
  • It is recommended to complete the online renewal using a laptop or desktop computer (instead of cell phone or tablet) to insure renewal screens format correctly.
  • The online renewal system works best with Google Chrome as the selected web browser. If unable to use Google Chrome, please update your browser to the most current version for security and optimal website performance.
  • Successful completion of LMFT license renewal and verification of the new license expiration date (December 31, 2026) can be verified using the Online License Lookup tool.
  • Continuing Education:  This is a continuing education reporting year.  All LMFTs licensed prior to January 1, 2024, are required to have completed 40 hours of Board-approved continuing education (which includes at least three (3) hours of Ethics CE, four (4) hours of Cultural Competency CE and four (4) hours of Supervision CE if LMFT holds Board- approved supervisor status) and have documentation of Board approval and course completion to provide to the Board upon request.  If licensed after January 1, 2024, check the CE proration chart for number of CE hours you must have completed.

License renewal requires you to choose between two CE options:

    (1)  Affirming completion of all required CE hours and that you have record of Board-issued CE approval numbers and documentation of CE completion. (Note: An LMFT who has received confirmation of their filing of an
Affidavit of CE Exemption due to retirement or permanent disability may check the box affirming completion of CE requirements); or

    (2) Requesting a 90-day extension to complete CE requirements and acknowledging the requirement to file attesting of CE completion by March 31, 2026.
  • $100.00 late fee: LMFT licenses may be renewed between January 1-31, 2026, with payment of a $100.00 late fee. To avoid the late fee, the LMFT license must be renewed by midnight December 31, 2025. You are strongly encouraged to renew early online, allowing time for any technical difficulties which may occur.
  • If you do not intend to renew your license, you must notify the Board in writing via US Mail or email at mft.board@state.mn.us. Absent such notice, the Board will terminate your license for non-renewal after January 31, 2026 (with license expiration date of December 31, 2025).
  • LMFT license renewal is not allowed after January 31, 2026; contact the Board office for information on license reinstatement.  License reinstatement requires completion of a mandatory criminal background check; the CBC process can take up to two weeks following submission of required fingerprints by the LMFT seeking reinstatement. You may NOT practice as an LMFT after January 31, 2026 if you have not renewed your license. Continuation of practice after license expiration is grounds for disciplinary action.
  • NOTE:  Your PUBLIC address will be printed on your LMFT license renewal card and the card mailed to your PUBLIC address; all other correspondence from the Board office is sent by email or mailed to the address you indicate as your “mailing address.”
  • Emeritus LMFT License status is available to those LMFTs over age 62 who are retired from practice. Emeritus application is available on the Board's website; filing of a paper application by US Mail is required. Payment of a one-time $125 emeritus status license fee is also required.

Workforce Survey:  The Board of Marriage and Family Therapy continues to partner with the MN Dept. of Health Office of Rural Health and Primary Care in a statewide workforce survey and requests the cooperation of all LMFTs.  Licensees will be asked to complete the survey as part of the online renewal process.

Renewal is closed for MN LAMFT licensees.
