- LMFT License Renewal fees have increased. Annual LMFT license renewal is now $175 and the late fee (for renewal after December 31) is now $100. This is the first LMFT license renewal increase in nearly 20 years and is necessary to support the cost of Board operations.
- LMFT License Renewal will open on November 15, 2023. All active LMFT licenses must be renewed by December 31, 2023. (Renewal Fee: $175.) Past due renewal between January 1–January 31, 2024 is allowed with payment of an additional $100 fee. No LMFT license can be renewed after January 31st.
- For LMFT licenses issued prior to January 1, 2022 – 40 hours of Board-approved Continuing Education is required. For LMFT licensees issued January 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023 –A prorated number of CE is required.
- 40 hours (or prorated) of Board-Approved CE should be completed before you renew your LMFT license. Hours completed on or after January 1, 2022 may be counted.
- PLAN AHEAD! If you do not have a Board-issued CE approval number for CE hours needed to meet the 40-hour (or prorated) CE requirement, you must submit an LMFT Application for CE Course Approval no later than November 1, 2023. Applications received by Nov. 1 will be reviewed and the LMFT will receive email notification of application approval or denial by December 22, in time for the LMFT to renew the license prior to December 31. (If course application is denied, it cannot be used to meet the 40-hour CE requirement.)
- CE applications received after November 1 will not be reviewed until January 2024. If you must complete CE hours after November 1, 2023 to satisfy the CE renewal requirement, or prefer to not have to complete the LMFT CE application, you should select a CE program listed on the Board’s website listing of approved CE programs. Many CE providers have numerous courses available online/on demand.
- LMFT license renewal requires you to choose between two CE options:
- Attesting to completion of all required CE hours, with Board-issued CE approval numbers and documentation of CE completion in your possession; or
- Requesting an extension to complete CE requirements and acknowledging the requirement to file documentation of CE program completion and Board-issued CE approval numbers for all CE hours on or before March 31, 2024.
- At time of LMFT License Renewal, if you: (1) have not completed 40 hours (or prorated amount) of Board-Approved CE; (2) do not have documentation of completion of required CE programs/hours; or (3) do not have a Board-issued CE approval number for all programs/hours, you may NOT attest to meeting CE requirements for LMFT license renewal. Instead, you MUST check the box requesting the 90-day extension requiring you to meet these three CE requirements by March 31, 2024. LMFTs requesting the 90-day extension are subject to possible CE audit.
- Every LMFT must complete at least 3 hours (or prorated) of Board-approved CE on Ethics. Website listing of approved CE courses notes whether Ethics CE has been approved & Board-issued CE approval emails also indicate Ethics CE approval if requested. If requesting Ethics CE approval when filing an LMFT Application for CE Course Approval, you must identify the specific program and/or portion of program for which Ethics CE is requested.
- Every LMFT must complete at least 4 hours (or prorated) of Board-approved CE on Cultural Competency (CC). Website listing of approved CE courses notes whether CC CE has been approved & Board-issued CE approval emails also indicate CC CE approval if requested. If requesting CC CE approval when filing an LMFT Application for CE Course Approval, you must identify the specific program and/or portion of program for which CC CE is requested.
- Every LMFT Board-approved Supervisor must complete at least 4 hours of Board-approved CE on Supervision. If your initial 30 hours of required supervisor training was completed after January 1, 2022, that training satisfies the 4-hour CE requirement for the 2022-2023 CE reporting period. Website listing of approved CE courses notes whether Supervision CE has been approved & Board-issued CE approval emails also indicate Supervision CE approval if requested. If requesting Supervision CE approval when filing an LMFT Application for CE Course Approval, you must identify the specific program and/or portion of program for which Supervision CE is requested.
- You may seek an exemption from continuing education only if you meet the requirements of Minn. Rule 5300.0320, subp. 11. If you qualify under this rule, you must contact the Board to request a CE exemption form.
