LICENSE RENEWAL

** Effective August 1, 2023, all US Bank service fees will be the responsibility of the card holder (applicant or licensee).  Service fees are non-refundable.

Renewal is past due for MN LAMFT licenses with a 06/30/2026 expiration date.

Renewal Fee: $150.00   (includes $50.00 late fee)

  • Renew Online. You will be required to log in via the secure website with a Username and Password. Use the “Forgot Username/Password” link if you do not remember your log in credentials.  Board staff do not have access to your password.
  • If you have never used the Board’s online system, click on “Register to Access Site.” This account will be used for all future online activity, so maintain a copy of your login information.
  • It is recommended to complete the online renewal using a laptop or desktop computer (instead of cell phone or tablet) to insure renewal screens format correctly.
  • The online renewal system works best with Google Chrome as the selected web browser. If unable to use Google Chrome, please update your browser to the most current version for security and optimal website performance.
  • Successful completion of LAMFT license renewal and verification of the new license expiration date (June 30, 2027) can be verified using the Online License Lookup tool.
  • $50.00 late fee: LAMFT licenses may be renewed between July 1 – July 31, 2026, with payment of a $50.00 late fee. To avoid the late fee, the LAMFT license must be renewed by midnight July 31, 2026. You are strongly encouraged to renew early online, allowing time for any technical difficulties which may occur.
  • If you do not intend to renew your license, you must notify the Board in writing via US Mail or email at mft.board@state.mn.us. Absent such notice, the Board will terminate your license for non-renewal on August 1, 2026 (with license expiration date of June 30, 2026). As LAMFT licensure is required of those seeking MN LMFT licensure, license termination will result in closure of the LMFT applicant record.
  • LAMFT license renewal is not allowed after July 31, 2026; contact the Board office for information on license reinstatement.  License reinstatement requires completion of a mandatory criminal background check; the CBC process can take up to two weeks following submission of required fingerprints by the LAMFT seeking reinstatement. You may NOT practice as an LAMFT after July 31, 2026, if you have not renewed your license. Continuation of practice after license expiration is grounds for disciplinary action.
  • NOTE:  Your PUBLIC address will be printed on your LAMFT license renewal card and the card mailed to your PUBLIC address; all other correspondence from the Board office is sent by email or mailed to the address you indicate as your “mailing address.”
  • Continuing Education:  LAMFTs are not required to report continuing education hours.
Reminder: Minnesota Rule 5300.0175 requires an LAMFT remain under the supervision of an LMFT Board-Approved Supervisor until independently licensed as an LMFT and must abide by all laws and rules governing the practice of marriage and family therapy.  In addition, the logging of clinical and supervision hours should continue until issuance of your LMFT license. The practice of marriage and family therapy by an LAMFT absent appropriate LMFT supervision may be grounds for disciplinary action by the MN Board of MFT. The LAMFT license must be renewed on a yearly basis for up to six (6) additional years after issuance.
For questions relating to license reinstatement please contact the MFT Board office at mft.board@state.mn.us
