CE hours must be completed BEFORE you may renew your LMFT license. Previously, an LMFT could request a 90-day CE extension at time of LMFT license renewal. This option was ELIMINATED by Board action in May 2018. If you do not have your CEs completed and a Board-issued approval number for all required hours, you cannot renew your LMFT license.
LMFT licenses issued prior to January 1, 2018 – 40 hours of Board-approved Continuing Education (CE) is required.
LMFT licenses issued after January 1, 2018 – A prorated number of CE is required. (See CE Proration chart.)
December 9, 2019: An LMFT Application for CE Course Approval received by December 9, 2019 will be reviewed and the LMFT will receive email notification of Board approval or denial by December 23, 2019, in time for timely online renewal by 12/31/2019. (If denied, the program hours cannot be used to meet the LMFT CE requirement.) If you must complete CE hours after December 9, you must select a CE program already listed on the Board’s website listing of approved CE programs.
December 10, 2019 – January 13, 2020: An LMFT Application for CE Course Approval received between December 10, 2019 – January 13, 2020 will be reviewed and the LMFT will receive email notification of Board approval or denial by January 24, 2020, in time for late online renewal by 01/31/2020. (If denied, the program hours cannot be used to meet the LMFT CE requirement.) If you must complete CE hours after January 13, you must select a CE program already listed on the Board’s website listing of approved CE programs.
January 13, 2020: CE applications received after January 13 will NOT be reviewed prior to the close of LMFT license renewal on January 31, 2020.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
3 hours of Board-approved Ethics CE required. Appropriate topics include, “professional ethics, family law, professional socialization, professional organizations, legal issues or interprofessional cooperation.” Please indicate on the LMFT CE application if requesting Ethics CE approval and identify the specific program and/or portion of program for which Ethics CE is requested.
4 hours of Board-approved Supervision CE required – only for LMFT Board-approved supervisors.
Online LMFT license renewal will open in late November 2019. License renewal must be completed by 12/31/2019. Past due renewal allowed January 1-31, 2020, with payment of additional $50 late fee. No LMFT license renewal after January 31.
CE Audit – A random sample of LMFTs will be selected for CE audit. If selected, you will receive notice by email to submit documentation of completion and the Board approval number for 40 hours of continuing education (or prorated amount), including 3 Ethics CE hours and 4 Supervision CE hours (for Board-approved supervisors only).
CE Exemption or Variance – You may seek an exemption from Continuing Education only if you meet the requirements of Minn. Rule 5300.0320, subpart 11 (MN Rule 5300.0320). If you qualify under this rule, you must contact the Board to request a CE exemption form. You may request a variance to CE requirements only if you satisfy the standards of MN Rule 5300.0340, and demonstrate that compliance with CE requirements imposes an undue burden/hardship.
