Real-Time Web Captioning Process

Captioning live streaming video requires coordinating the captioner, an encoding system, and the video display.

  1. The captioner (typically a reporter or voicewriter) calls into the event to obtain the audio feed.
  2. The captioner's output stream must connect to an encoder. Either the webinar system has a captioning encoder built in or it connects with a third party online encoding service provider.
  3. The caption encoder outputs a data stream that connects with the video display.

Here's a diagram graphically depicting this process:

Diagram depicting two parallel streams, one from video camera, the other from captioner at steno machine. Video stream passes through speaker to multimedia device. Caption stream passes from steno machine through caption encoder to multimedia device.
