Tourists view the lunatics at Pennsylvania State Hospital. The same view was available to Londoners, but for a fee, at Bethlehem Hospital, and at most Italian and Spanish asylums. Early institution superintendents in the United States complained that no sooner was the motor car invented than "dissolute young people" used it to drive out to asylums in the country, hoping to get a look at real live crazy people.
This was also the era of the touring freak show.
