The comprehensive registered barber exam includes a 100 question multiple choice and true/false written test covering the Barber School curriculum, sanitation, disinfection, infection control, and Minnesota Statutes and Rules. The practical examination consists of: full face straight razor shave, taper haircut, facial, and rolling perm rods. During the practical examination, barbers are evaluated on the total experience including preparations, sanitation and infection control procedures, precision, and overall skill. To obtain a registered barber certificate of registration, a minimum score of 75% is required on the written and haircut portion of the exam, and an overall average score of 75% on the shave, facial, and perm rods collectively. Barbers who wish to reinstate a registration or obtain a registration through the reciprocity process are required to purchase a Home Study Course prior to the examination. Current students also are required to purchase the Home Study Course.
Exam results are mailed within five days of the examination. If the exam is passed, the registration certificate is mailed to the barber, and the registration will be active online. If the exam is failed, a letter detailing requirements to retake the exam will be provided with the exam results.
Examination accommodations will be made for individuals with documented need for accommodation. If reasonable accommodations are needed, please contact the office for additional information and assistance.
If English is not your first language, you may hire an interpreter to assist you with the written examination. You must inform the Board of your intent to bring an interpreter to the exam. Interpreters must be registered with the state, on the state roster of interpreters, and you must complete an interpreter request form and identify your interpreter when you apply for the examination.
