Be prepared!

Your employer has a right to ask you for documentation that supports your request for an accommodation.  Your employer, however, may not ask for medical information unrelated to your request.

The type of information your employer may request includes:

  • Type of disability or impairment, including severity and duration
  • Activities limited by your disability or impairment
  • How your disability or impairment limits your ability to perform your job
  • Explain how the accommodation will help you perform your job

Take time to think about how you would respond if your employer asked you for the information listed above. Jot down your thoughts. By making notes now, you’ll be prepared later if you need to justify a request for an accommodation.
