Disability Advocates Frustrated By Lack Of Action in Law Enforcement Reform

July 2020
By Jane McClure

Efforts towards law enforcement reform, spurred by the death of George Floyd, face challenges at both state and federal levels. While racial disparities in law enforcement encounters have been widely acknowledged, studies suggest that people with disabilities make up a significant portion of those killed by law enforcement officers.

Advocates emphasize that disability cuts across all racial and ethnic backgrounds. In Minnesota, the special legislative session concluded without progress on law enforcement reform, frustrating activists. Mental health advocacy groups sought reforms during the session, including training funds documentation, crisis intervention, and specific training for interactions with individuals on the autism spectrum.
