Access Press 4/10/2019
The Prevention of Abuse and Neglect

The Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities and the Department of Health have released a package of resources around the Bill of Rights for Supervised Living Facilities. The Package explains rights in a way that an individual being served can understand. The Package includes an easy-read guide, instructor handbook, resident workbook, and videos that help to explain specific rights that people with disabilities have when living in Supervised Living Facilities. Rights include: the right to refuse treatment, the right to be free of maltreatment, the right to personal property, and the right to lodge complaints, just to name a few.

Minnesota’s Olmstead Plan was developed to ensure that people with disabilities are living, learning, working, and enjoying life in the most integrated setting. The Prevention of Abuse and Neglect is an important aspect of the Olmstead Plan, because people need to know their rights in order to protect them.
