Job Description: The City of Fairmont is seeking a full-time Police Chief due to the retirement of its current one. Reporting to the City Administrator, the Police Chief is a key advisor in public safety matters and is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction, and operational effectiveness of the Police Department. The FPD consists of 18 full-time officers, two full-time records technicians, two part-time police officers, and a part-time CSO-Cadet.
Minimum qualifications include being (or eligible to be) licensed as a Peace Officer in Minnesota or pass POST’s out-of-state officer or military reciprocity program; possessing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field; and having at least 10 years’ full-time law enforcement experience, including at least 5 years’ experience in a supervisory/administrative position. Preferred qualifications include experience in the following areas: progressive, community-centered law enforcement leadership, effective allocation of department resources, and implementation/administration of various law enforcement programs or projects.
Successful candidates must also possess a valid MN Class D Commercial Driver’s License (or be able to obtain it) as well as a good driving record. Additionally, they must be able to pass a physical evaluation, psychological evaluation, and thorough background investigation if selected as the final candidate.
