Bill Poirier

Assistant Commissioner and Chief Technology Officer

Bill Poirier serves as Minnesota IT Services (MNIT)’s Assistant Commissioner and Chief Technology Officer. In his role, Bill leads Minnesota’s efforts in building strategies and integrating new technologies to deliver high-quality customer service and pave the path forward for IT consolidation.

Prior to joining MNIT, Bill was the CIO and Chief Security Officer for the nation's largest private K-12 education management organization. He was responsible for strategy, planning, development, innovation, and nationwide technology and security operations supporting more than 8,000 employees, 84 schools, and 70,000 students.

Bill served for over 29 years in the United States Air Force and the Massachusetts Air National Guard, retiring as a Colonel. He served in positions across the globe, including almost two years in combat environments across Southwest Asia. In his final military role, he commanded a 3,000-person global organization that provided United States Air Force’s cybersecurity services, offensive cyber forces, and core IT enterprise services supporting business, training, air and combat operations for 800,000 customers worldwide.

Bill received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA. He continued his education, receiving an MBA from Strayer University in Washington D.C., and a Master of Science degree from the National War College in Washington D.C.
