Home and community based services are generally preferred over institutions by people who rely on long-term services and supports. These services allow individuals to maintain greater independence and contribute to a more sustainable long-term service and support system. The Department of Human Service's (DHS') goal is to continue increasing the proportion of people receiving home and community based care.
In order to increase the availability of home and community-based services, DHS partners with counties, tribes, service providers, and other key stakeholders to develop and implement programs statewide.
The percentage of people receiving long-term services and supports in their homes or in a community-based setting has increased by 25 percentage points since 2002.
