As Deputy Commissioner of Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB), Eric Hallstrom oversees the state’s financial, workforce, and information resource operations to better serve all Minnesotans. He manages MMB’s internal and enterprise activities, oversees risk-management processes, and monitors the agency’s performance with a focus on strong leadership, diversity, and inclusion.
Prior to joining MMB, Eric served as Special Counsel to the United States Solicitor of Labor, where he provided strategic guidance in meeting the legal service demands of the entire U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). As a lead attorney for the agency, he directed all legal services related to congressional oversight of DOL’s divisions, programs, actives, and policy implementation.
Eric brings over a decade of experience in public law and policy to the state. Before his time at DOL, he was an attorney at the Federal Election Commission, serving as Chief Counsel to then Commission Chair Cynthia Bauerly. He represented public sector employees during several years in private practice, and served as legislative counsel to a Member of Congress. Eric began his career a few blocks away in St. Paul, clerking for the Honorable Donald Lay on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
