Diversity and Inclusion Training

In 2017, Enterprise Talent Development (ETD) initiated a series of training activities around diversity and inclusion. These activities continue statewide and are designed to advance a more inclusive work environment throughout the enterprise. These efforts are supported by and are intended to meet Governor Dayton's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

New training requirements

Executive leaders. Agency executive leaders (commissioner, deputy, and assistant commissioners) and the governor’s staff are required to complete diversity and inclusion training. This training includes classroom training, individual Intercultural Development Inventory assessments, and one-on-one coaching.

All employees. Work is underway to offer diversity and inclusion training for all employees. Look for quarterly announcements for diversity and inclusion opportunities this year.

Managers and supervisors. All cabinet agency supervisors, managers, directors, human resources, affirmative action, ADA coordinators, and recruiting staff, are required to complete one of three diversity and inclusion course options offered by ETD. Beginning July 2018, diversity and inclusion training will be incorporated in the manager and supervisor core programs. In addition, ETD will continue to periodically offer diversity and inclusion courses as part of its regular programming that is open to all employees.

Training Achievements

As of June 2018, ETD provided 175 full day sessions of diversity and inclusion training in 20 locations in greater Minnesota (in addition to those held in the metro area), and served approximately 4,500 employees. The following are details of our training:

  • 2,586 state employees completed Building an Inclusive Workplace Understanding Your Role (Common Sense Consulting)
  • 443 state employees completed Fostering Diversity and Inclusion in the Talent Management Process (Common Sense Consulting)
  • 1,421 state employees completed Building Inclusive Teams (Winters Group)
  • 108 commissioners, deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, and other state leaders completed Fostering Inclusive Leadership (Winters Group)
