2019 Governor's Council on the MLK Day Celebration

Date: January 21, 2019 (Monday)

Join the State of Minnesota Governor’s Council on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday as we host the 33rd Annual Celebration of the MLK Holiday! On Monday, January 21, 2019, we will celebrate “Women of Color in STEM” at the Ordway Theater in St. Paul. This celebration is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and will fill up fast, so please arrive early. ASL interpreters and CART Services will be available on site. The keynote speakers for this event are Dr. Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to travel in space, and 3M CEO Mike Roman. We will have a live DJ, a youth rally, and speakers to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event will honor and aware Dr. Reatha Clark King and Mrs. Katherine Coleman Johnson. Dr. Reatha Clark King is an event, businesswoman, philanthropist, and educator, and will receive the Civil Rights Legend Award. Mrs. Katherine Coleman Johnson is an educator, mathematician, and NASA pioneer and trailblazer, and will receive the Governor’s Equity and Justice Legacy Award. 

The celebration is hosted by Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and sponsored by 3M. The emcees for the event are Adrrienne Broaddus and James Burroughs.

MLK Holiday Breakfast

Date: January 21, 2019 (Monday) 
Time: 7 to 9:30 a.m.  
Where: Minneapolis Armory, 500 South 6th St, Minneapolis, MN 55415

Each year, the General Mills Foundation and UNCF present an annual MLK Holiday Breakfast in downtown Minneapolis to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With the help of countless volunteers, Interfaith Action of Greater Saint Paul hosts breakfasts at multiple neighborhood locations, featuring a live broadcast of the General Mills event as well as a hot breakfast and local programming.

This year's keynote speaker is Emmy Award-winning news anchor and CNN journalist Don Lemon. The event will be held at The Armory in downtown Minneapolis.

Ticket is required at the Downtown Minneapolis event.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast and Day of Service 2019 – St. Cloud

Date: January 21, 2019 (Monday)

Where: River’s Edge Convention Center, Haws Room,10 Fourth Ave. South, St. Cloud, Minnesota

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast and Day of Service honors the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. On this day we commemorate Dr. King's dream of a multiracial nation united in justice, peace, and reconciliation. The breakfast will feature a keynote address by best-selling author, prize-winning journalist, acclaimed biographer and cultural historian Wil Haygood who tells the story of America through the lens of history, politics, sports, race and the lives of change-making African-Americans. Best known as the author of the New York Times bestsellers The Butler and Showdown, his work has chronicled America’s civil rights journey through acclaimed biographies of Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Sammy Davis, Jr., Sugar Ray Robinson and Eugene Allen, the real-life inspiration for Lee Daniels’ award-winning film, The Butler.

The Current Crisis in Race Relations: Honoring the Legacy of MLK (Duluth)

Date: January 20 & 21, 2019 (Sunday & Monday)  
Jan. 20: Inter-faith service: 4 p.m., Jan. 20, Peace Church, 1111 North 11th Ave. E., Duluth.

Jan. 21: Community breakfast: 7 a.m., Jan. 21, Coppertop Church (First United Methodist Church), 230 E. Skyline Pkwy., Duluth.

March, beginning at 8 a.m., Jan. 21, Washington Center, 310 North First Ave. W., Duluth.

Rally, with the gathering beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the rally starting at noon, Jan. 21, Duluth Entertainment Community Center (DECC), 350 Harbor Dr., Duluth. In the event of extreme cold, the march will be shortened and will go through the skyway in downtown Duluth to the DECC.

Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration (Minneapolis)

The annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration includes a keynote presentation by Paul Robinson, Senior Community Leadership Manager for the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation and a pastor at Grace Outreach Church; a performance by Chastity Brown; and a tribute to Dr. King, The celebration is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate. Refreshments will be available following the program.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (Morris)

Date: January 21, 2019 (Monday)  
Time: 12:45 to 7:30 p.m.   
Where: Faith Lutheran Church, 108 W. Eighth St., Morris.

Registration, 12:45 p.m.; service projects (community meal preparation; literacy project; art with children; preparation projects for the community march, including dialogue and sign making), 1-4:30 p.m.; march, 4:30-5 p.m.; sign-along, 5-5:30 p.m.; program, 6-6:30 p.m.; and a community meal following the program, Jan. 21, Faith Lutheran Church, 108 W. Eighth St., Morris.

Volunteers will meet at Faith Lutheran Church at 12:45 p.m. and transportation to the event will be available at 12:45, 4:15 and 5 p.m. from the University of Minnesota-Morris to the church. The bus will return to campus at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult and participants age 13 and younger must have permission from their parents or guardians.
