Calvin L. Brown

Justice, Chief Justice

Born in Goshen, New Hampshire, April 26, 1854. Came to Minnesota in 1855; admitted to the bar in 1876. Located at Morris in 1878, and was elected County Attorney of Stevens County in 1882, 1884, and 1886. Appointed Judge of the Sixteenth Judicial District by Governor McGill on March 10, 1887, and elected to that office in 1888 and again in 1894. Appointed Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court by Governor Lind to succeed Justice Buck in 1899. Reelected in 1904, 1910. In 1912, nominated for the position of Chief Justice as a non-partisan candidate. Elected in November to that office. Served as Chief Justice until his death on September 24, 1923. Tenure as Chief Justice was from 1/7/1913 - 9/24/1923 or 10 years, 8 months, 17 days.
