Corrections Agent Senior Promotional Process

A DOC Corrections Agent may request a non-competitive promotion to Corrections Agent, Senior after meeting the following requirements:

Employee responsibilities

a) Completion of two years of employment as a Corrections Agent with the DOC or another corrections delivery system, and successful completion of the probationary period as a DOC Corrections Agent. (Note: Temporary unclassified DOC Corrections Agents who meet all other requirements except completion of the probationary period will be considered eligible for re-comparison of their position to Corrections Agent Senior)

b) Possession of a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in corrections, criminal justice, criminology, counseling, counseling psychology, education, law, law enforcement, psychology, sociology, social work, or a human services related field with an emphasis in corrections/criminal justice;

c) Performance reviews during the past two years indicating that the Corrections Agent fully meets all standards in each area of responsibility;

d) No written reprimands within the last 12 months and no suspensions or greater discipline within the last 36 months; and

e) The agent must demonstrate thorough understanding and use of the evidence-based practices listed below. The supervisor evaluates and documents the agent's performance as satisfactory or excellent in each of the following areas, using the Integrated Principles of EBP form or equivalent:

(1) Role clarification

(2) Exploring needs

(3) Focus

(4) Evocation

(5) Planning

(6) Cognitive interventions

(7) Effective us of rewards and responding to non-compliance, and

(8) Formal Assessment

Supervisor responsibilities

a) The supervisor completes a minimum of one review of the Integrated Principles of EBP, Field Safety, Office Safety, and File Management forms or equivalent. In order for the recommendation for promotion to proceed, the supervisor must attest to the agent’s ability, and the evaluation must contain only minimal deficiencies.

b) The supervisor submits a human resources (HR) transaction request form (TRF) for approval by his/her regional manager and the field services (FS) director.

HR responsibilities

The HR staffing unit reviews the information submitted in the TRF request to verify the employee’s eligibility to promote via reclassification to Corrections Agent, Senior, and may request additional information and clarification on the information received.

a) If HR approves the request, the HR staffing unit documents the decision and notifies the employee and the requesting supervisor/manager of the promotion.

b) If HR determines the employee does not meet eligibility requirements to promote to Corrections Agent, Senior, the HR staffing unit notifies the requesting supervisor/manager in writing, provides rationale for the decision, and provides information related to the ability to appeal the decision in accordance with DOC Policy 103.010, “Job Classification, and Position Review.”
