Drug - OraPred ODT (prednisolone sodium phosphate orally disintegrating tablets)
June 2009
Therapeutic area - Oral anti-inflammatory/corticosteroid
Indicated for the control of severe or incapacitating allergic conditions intractable to adequate trials of conventional treatment in adult and pediatric populations with asthma or asthma caused by respiratory disorders.
Patient requires an oral steroid for a respiratory condition and can not take a swallow formulation (tablet or solution), as demonstrated by at least one trial.
If greater than one course of therapy or one fill of OraPred is desired, rationale will have to be provided why a less expensive, generic oral steroid can not be used.
Orapred ODT is a rapidly disintegrating tablet of prednisolone, which may be of benefit for pediatric patients who require oral steroids, but who dislike the taste of many liquid preparations and can not take a tablet by mouth. However, OraPred is a much more expensive dosage form of an oral steroid.
Each ODT (AWP pricing):
Relative equivalents
1 prednisolone = 1 prednisone = 0.8 methylprednisolone
As recommended by the NHLBI, prednisone, prednisone or methylprednisolone pediatric dosing is 1-2 mg/kg/day.
