Innovation grants awarded

The Minnesota Department of Human Services Disability Services Division launched its innovation grants program in 2016 to support new and innovative ideas to help people with disabilities to work and earn money, live in housing of their choice, choose their care providers, their friends and social activities. Below are grant awards from previous rounds of grant-making.

Example of funded projects

A person with disabilities enters a car operated by Lyft, which partners with Dakota County to help people receiving services get to and from work

This video spotlights the Dakota County Lyft pilot project, a collaboration between Dakota County Human Services and the ride-share company Lyft. The project provides door-to-door rides to and from work for people with disabilities who live in Dakota County. The video features interviews with people who use the service and shows them going to work, the gym and shopping. DSD awarded $100,000 to Dakota County for this project, which kicked off in January 2018. The National Association of Counties (NACo) granted Dakota County a 2020 Achievement Award for this program.
