Notice about recent data breaches impacting some DHS clients and employees

State agencies, including the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), continue to be the target of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. Information about three successful cyberattacks involving the state email accounts of DHS employees can be found below. We currently have no evidence suggesting that the information stored in these accounts has actually been viewed, downloaded, or misused in any way.  We take data privacy very seriously at DHS, and continue to work with our employees and partners to prevent future cyberattacks.

·         In March 2018, hackers accessed the state email account of a DHS employee, potentially exposing the private information of some people who had a connection with our Direct Care and Treatment area. The hacker used this email account to send out spam email messages and may have accessed some of the information contained in the email account. You can find out more about this cyberattack and our response to it by reading the notification letter (PDF) from April 2019, emailing MN_DHS_DCTHealthInformation@state.mn.us or by calling 651-431-5020 (local) or 833-246-8262 (toll free).

·         In June and July 2018, hackers accessed the state email accounts of two DHS employees, potentially exposing the private information of some people who had a connection with our Direct Care and Treatment and State Medical Review Team areas.  The hacker used these email accounts to send out spam email messages and may have accessed some of the information contained in the email accounts.  You can find out more about this cyberattack and our response to it by reading the notification letter (PDF) from October 2018, emailing MN_DHS_DCTHealthInformation@state.mn.us or by calling 651-431-2255 (local) or 833-871-8419 (toll free).

·         In September 2018, hackers accessed the state email account of a DHS employee, potentially exposing the private information of some people who had a connection with our Children and Family Services area. The hacker used this email account to send out spam email messages and may have accessed some of the information contained in the email account. You can find out more about this cyberattack and our response to it by reading the notification letter (PDF) from January 2019, emailing csp.general.admin.dhs@state.mn.us or by calling 651-431-2854 (local) or 833-633-8121 (toll free).
