Cara Benson of the Disability Services Division received one of 10 national Self Direction awards at Applied Self Direction's 2017 conference in Baltimore. The award recognizes exceptional contributions to advancing self-direction and supporting people with disabilities in self-direction.
The nomination of Benson, a home care and self-directed policy staff person in the division, stated in part, "Cara is committed to ensuring that Minnesotans have access to self-directed services that make sense for their individual and unique lives. Cara refuses to accept that individuals cannot be trusted to manage their own programs. Cara designs a program that can be innovative, flexible AND can have strong fiscal integrity."
Benson was among five Minnesotans who received the award. Applied Self Direction is the technical assistance, training and membership arm of the National Resource Center for Participant-Directed Services, founded in 2009 at the Boston College School of Social Work.
