With 16 Fortune 500 companies, Minnesota ranks 13th nationwide in the number of Fortune 500 companies. More impressive, the Twin Cities ranks first among the 30 largest metropolitan areas nationwide – and Minnesota ranks fourth – in Fortune 500 companies per 1 million people.

Minnesota is home to six of Forbes Largest Private Companies, ranking 11th nationwide. The state also ranks 9th in the number of private companies per 1 million people. With revenues of nearly $114.6 billion, Minnesota-based Cargill ranks second in the country among private companies.
Standard & Poor’s index
Minnesota ranks 12th nationwide in total number of in Standard & Poor’s index (S&P) companies and sixth in S&P companies per 1 million people. The S&P is one of the most widely quoted American indexes because it represents the largest publicly traded corporations in the U.S. by market value.
