Austin is home to food giant Hormel, maker of SPAM, Jennie-O turkey, Skippy peanut butter, Dinty Moore beef stew, and other food products. Hormel's consistent and steady growth have resulted in below average unemployment rates for Austin and Mower County in recent years. As of February 2016, the unemployment rate was at 3.7% in Austin and Mower County. This is below both the state and national average.
Thanks to an established economy, Austin has great infrastructure. Major highways passing through town include Interstate 90, U.S. Route 218, and MN Highway 105. Austin is also located on rail lines owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Austin also has a municipal airport and is located near the international commercial airports of Rochester and Minneapolis-St. Paul.
