Goal #1: Improved Educational Outcomes Transcript

MNCDHH Goal #1: Improved Educational Outcomes

(Signed by Nancy Diener, Commission Member)

MCDHH's first goal is to improve educational outcomes for students who are Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing. Many of these students are currently lagging behind hearing students in the their age groups. Graduation rates are also lower.

We need to improve education for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind students so that they will graduate on par with hearing students, with the same outcomes. Once they complete high school, they will either be ready for college or ready for work. How will we accomplish these goals?

First, we will work with a group called Minnesota Collaborative Outcomes Education Plan. This group studies and analyzes data to improve education for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind students. We will support them, collaborate with them, as well as evaluating their results to see how we can help with progress.

But can we do it alone? No, we need your help and need you to get involved with us to improve educational outcomes for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind students. We want linguistic appropriate education and culturally appropriate education for them.

Also, we will push the legislature to pass laws that will help create a better system for Deaf education, including, one, having IEPs - Individualized Education Plans - that give priority to language and communication.

Second, there will be appropriate school placements so students are in the right schools with the right programs for them to learn best.

Third, the staff and faculty in these programs must be skilled - highly skilled - we must have very high standards for staff and faculty working with students to ensure they are providing a culturally rich, linguistically appropriate learning environment for students.

So, if you can help, we would be appreciative. Thank you.
