Should I Get Tested for COVID-19?

People who do not have symptoms generally should not be tested for COVID-19. Due to national shortages of lab testing supplies, we do not have an unlimited capacity for testing.

WARNING:
This screening tool can help people decide whether they should be tested for COVID-19. This tool is not a substitute for medical advice. It should not stop you from seeking medical attention if you need it. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 and notify the operator that you have or think you might have COVID-19.

Please confirm that you understand this warning and that you are a Minnesota resident to continue:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle pain
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Other less common symptoms include gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • You have been in close contact or live with someone known to have COVID-19.
  • You have been told by a healthcare provider that you may have been exposed to COVID-19.
  • Older adults (age ≥ 65 years)
  • Immunocompromised (e.g., cancer, solid organ transplant, other immunosuppressive drugs, chronic lung disease, hemodialysis, advanced HIV)
  • Pregnant
  • History of living homeless or in congregate facilities (such as dorms, fraternities, sororities, shelters, jail, prison, skilled nursing facilities, adult family homes)
  • Older adults (age ≥ 65 years)
  • Immunocompromised (e.g., cancer, solid organ transplant, other immunosuppressive drugs, chronic lung disease, hemodialysis, advanced HIV)
  • Pregnant
  • History of living homeless or in congregate facilities (such as dorms, fraternities, sororities, shelters, jail, prison, skilled nursing facilities, adult family homes)

Recommendation: GET TESTED

In addition, take these steps IMMEDIATELY :

  • Isolate in your home. Seclude yourself to a room by yourself and use caution in common areas. 
  • Travel for screening and testing purposes only, by private vehicle, and wear a mask.
  • Do NOT attend public, group, or family activities AT ALL.
  • If you must visit your local emergency department, CALL FIRST for instruction. 
  • Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • Regularly disinfect commonly touched areas.

Recommendation: High Risk

You do not need to be tested for COVID-19 at this time since you do not have symptoms. There may be certain individuals (e.g., health care providers) or specific situations where testing individuals without symptoms is recommended. If you have questions, talk with your employer or health care provider.

In addition, take these steps IMMEDIATELY:

  • Stay home for 14 days.
  • Separate yourself from others, including in your home, as much as possible.
  • Watch for symptoms of COVID-19. If you develop symptoms, contact your health care provider about getting tested.
  • Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • Regularly disinfect commonly touched areas.

Recommendation: Low Risk

Recommendation: Medium Risk - Continue to Limit Risk

It is not likely you need to be tested for COVID-19 at this time. Because you have limited your exposure by adhering to the precautions ordered by the Minnesota Department of Health, you also have lower risk of being exposed to COVID-19. However, since you are an older adult or a person who has a severe chronic medical condition, you may be at higher risk if you do not continue to limit exposure.
