Medica (Medica of Wisconsin/Medica Insurance Company) has reached its 2017 enrollment limit for health insurance plans in Minnesota’s individual market. Effective this morning (November 11, 2016), individual health plans from Medica are no longer available for purchase by new customers, either on or off the MNsure exchange.
The Medica enrollment limit does not affect current Medica customers who want to renew their coverage for 2017. Your Medica coverage is automatically renewed unless you choose another insurer or otherwise terminate your current Medica contract prior to December 31, 2016. However, if you wish to change your specific plan with Medica or determine your eligibility for federal tax credits that automatically reduce monthly premiums, you should call MNsure at 1-855-366-7873.
The Medica enrollment limit also does not affect anyone living in the five counties (Benton, Crow Wing, Mille Lacs, Morrison and Stearns) where the only available insurers all have enrollment limits. In an agreement with the Minnesota Commerce Department, Medica will continue to accept new customers from these five counties.
Medica has limited 2017 statewide enrollment to 50,000 in order to ensure its capacity to serve its policyholders. Blue Plus does not have an enrollment limit for 2017; however, all other insurers in Minnesota’s individual market do have limits for 2017. Only Medica has reached its limit.
Minnesotans who buy their own health insurance in the individual market are encouraged to visit the MNsure website to shop for a plan and make their enrollment selection for 2017. Minnesotans can also determine their eligibility for federal tax credits that automatically reduce monthly premiums. This financial assistance is available only for insurance plans purchased through MNsure.
Medica’s enrollment figures were validated by the Minnesota Commerce Department.
