Criminal Background Check - Effective September 1, 2017 forward

The Minnesota Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators is statutorily required to complete a Federal and State Criminal Background Check prior to issuing your license. In Minnesota, a formal application to the Board will initiate this separate processing conducted by another agency.   Initial results indicate this may add three to four weeks to complete the CBC and application to license process.  Once you apply online or the paper application is received, the Criminal Background Check Unit will contact you with directions to complete the CBC.  The $32.00 fee is added to your initial application and there is no additional fee.  The Minnesota Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators will be informed of the results and move your application forward.

Getting Started with a NHA License

  • Make yourself familiar with the Minnesota State Rules 6400.5000 to 6400.6970, governing the practice of Nursing Home Administration - as an applicant and licensee in Minnesota, you are responsible for following these rules
  • Review the Applicant Handbook to answer any questions you have about application, exams, and the licensure process before application. The Applicant Handbook is a thorough and valuable reference guide for the first few years of licensure.
  • All candidates must complete the Application with one of the following licensure tracks:
    • Option A: New Graduate from Minnesota or NAB LNHA program with examinations
    • Option B: Applicant with experience/course waivers, with examinations
    • Option C: Endorsement: LNHA/Administrator of Record in two of previous five years
    • Option D: ACHCA Certification
  • Request Official Transcript (s) from the your college registrar's office after your grades and degree has been posted, showing minimum of BA/BS in addition to any LTC coursework
  • Submit a Current Resume with your paper application or following your online application by email to benha@state.mn.us
  • If currently or previously licensed in another state(s), contact each jurisdiction to have a License Verification sent to the Minnesota Board (Options B, C, D)

 Attention Applicants:

On September 1, 2017, Minnesota Rules will change to include increased practicum hours and updated educational requirements.  Licensure applications received before August 31, 2017 will be required to meet the current State Rules.  Licensure applications received on or after September 1, 2017 will need to meet the new requirements.
