EFFECTIVE FOR THE 2016-2017 CE REPORTING PERIOD, the limitation on homestudy or online CE programs is eliminated. LMFTs may earn any amount of online / homestudy CE credits.
EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2016, LMFTs must complete 40 hours of continuing education every 2-year reporting period. This new, 40-hour requirement will not be enforced by the Board until the January 1, 2018-December 31, 2019 CE reporting period; however, LMFTs are encouraged to begin complying with the new 40-hour requirement now.
IN ADDITION, LMFTs must also now complete 3 hours of Board-approved CE in “ethical and professional studies education covering professional ethics, family law, professional socialization, professional organizations, legal issues, or interprofessional cooperation.” Again, this new requirement will not be enforced by the Board until the January 1, 2018-December 31, 2019 CE reporting period; however, LMFTs are encouraged to begin complying with this new requirement now.
Continuing education reporting is required at time of license renewal of each odd-numbered year (on or before December 31). Minnesota rule 5300.0320 details the continuing education requirements for MN LMFTs. All CEs used to satisfy LMFT license renewal requirements must have a Board-issued approval number.
LAMFTs are not subject to CE requirements as a condition of license renewal, but are encouraged to remain current on training relating to MFT practice.
