Starting October 16, 2017 a Criminal Background Check is Required of New Applicants, LMFT Reciprocity Applicants and Those Seeking License Reinstatement
Minnesota law now requires that all new applicants for licensure (those filing the Application for National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy, individuals filing the Application for LMFT Licensure by Reciprocity, and those seeking LAMFT or LMFT license reinstatement), must complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check (Minn. Stat. 214.075). The Minnesota Health Licensing Boards have cooperatively established the Criminal Background Check Program to help you efficiently complete this mandatory background check. Fingerprints are crosschecked with databases of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Federal Bureau of Investigation. Applications received on and after October 16, 2017, must include the $32.00 criminal background check fee with the $110.00 application fee (for the Application for National Exam - a total of $142.00) or with the $220.00 application fee (for the Application for LMFT Licensure by Reciprocity - a total of $252.00). After your application with proper fees is received, the Criminal Background Check Program will send you a packet containing additional information and directions. You are responsible for having your fingerprints taken promptly and for completing all required paperwork so as to not delay application processing. Previously-taken fingerprints cannot be used. Some agencies charge a fee for fingerprinting services. Fingerprinting can be done without a fee at the Criminal Background Check Program office. Please contact the CBC office to make an appointment after you receive the CBC information packet.
