Under Minnesota Laws of 2017, Chapter 5, Article 2, section 57, for state fiscal years 2018 and 2019, $220,000 is available each year in state funding. The Office of Higher Education will award a total of $750,000 in grants to eligible alternative teacher preparation providers. Alternative teacher preparation providers receiving the grant must use the grant to get unit and program approval, recruit diverse teachers, or establish professional development programs. The Office of Higher Education hopes to have its application available in December.
The Minnesota Teacher Candidate Grant provides post-secondary financial assistance to eligible students enrolled in Minnesota teacher preparation programs during one term in which the student is completing a required 12-week or more student teaching experience.
On a funds available basis, selected undergraduate and graduate students may receive awards up to $7,500. Applicants must intend to work in an identified shortage area and/or belong to a racial or ethnic group underrepresented in the Minnesota teacher workforce to be eligible. The Minnesota Department of Education will grant three million dollars over the biennium through a competitive grant program for schools with more than 30 percent minority students to design and launch a board approved nonconventional teacher residency pilot program. The program must provide tuition scholarships or stipends to enable school district employees or community members affiliated with a school district who seek an education license to participate in a nonconventional teacher preparation program. School districts and charter schools may also apply for grants to develop innovative Grow Your Own programs that encourage secondary school students to pursue teaching. The Minnesota Department of Education is not currently accepting grant applications for 2017. Check back in July of 2018.
