Housing and Redevelopment Authority - Housing Choice Voucher
DESCRIPTION: Government-funded program (also known as Section 8 vouchers) that provides rental assistance to eligible seniors, singles, families, and persons with disabilities to secure affordable housing. This Housing Authority agency accepts applications to the program and issues the vouchers to qualified applicants. This agency also makes the approved rental subsidy payment to the landlord. Participants will pay approximately 30% of their income for rent and are able to take the voucher with them if they move. MORE INFORMATION The city of Mankato administers the federally funded Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program for both the city of Mankato and for the Blue Earth County Economic Development Authority (EDA) . Program participants receive a voucher that can be used to rent a unit in the private rental market. Program participants pay about 30% of their income toward their rent and utilities. Before assistance is paid, the unit is inspected to ensure it is safe, decent, and sanitary. The Mankato and Blue Earth County Economic Development Authorities currently serve about 500 families and individuals on the Housing Choice Voucher Program. The city of Mankato also administers the Bridges Rental Assistance program for the Blue Earth County EDA.

Contact the Housing Authority where you want to live to get on a Section 8 Voucher waiting list. Waiting lists for vouchers are often long or closed. When the list is opened, the public will be notified that applications will be accepted.
Eligibility
Housing Choice Vouchers are limited to low-income families and individuals. Your eligibility is based on: 1) annual gross income; 2) whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status. Applicants must meet Income guidelines (https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/il.html) set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Applicants must meet income guidelines and pass a background check to be eligible.
