Dental insurance helps pay for visits to the dentist. Costs may include the premium, annual deductible, coinsurance and co-payments. Some plans may limit coverage to a specific total dollar amount per year. Plans may cover:

• Checkups
• Cleanings
• X-rays
• Orthodontia
• Oral surgery

Plans are one of two types: fee-for-service or managed care. This means members can see differences in:

• The cost they pay for services
• Which dentists they see
• How the dentist is paid
• Fee-for-service plans have a larger choice of dentists but require members to do billing paperwork.
• Managed care plans have members use dentists in a network but take care of the paperwork
