Legal Assistance

DESCRIPTION: Legal aid program that offers legal counseling and/or representation for low-income individuals, typically in the areas of disability law, elder law and family law Free or low cost legal services help people who are unable to afford a lawyer get access to the court system. MORE INFORMATION Offers civil legal aid (matters that fall outside of the criminal justice system) by attorneys licensed to practice in Minnesota State District Court and Leech Lake Tribal Court. Programs available to income eligible residents, living at or near poverty, and living in Northeastern Minnesota, include: Private Attorney Involvement program providing free legal advice, assistance and representation to low-income people for civil legal concerns such as: * Family law * Consumer assistance * Adoption * Bankruptcy * Employment * Estate planning * Guardianship/conservatorship * Probate * Real estate Legal Kiosk Project which provides kiosks stationed in a variety of community locations offering the public the ability to apply for civil legal aid services, access legal resources, and, in some cases, attend online meetings and remote court hearings in privacy. * Kiosks can be located [here](https://www.legalkiosk.org/locations) Senior Citizens' Law Project that helps seniors by: * Advising clients * Representing clients in court and in administrative hearings * Negotiating on your behalf. * Helping you understand long-term care * Helping you plan for incapacity * Helping you protect your income and benefits, housing, and your safety and security * Helping you stop harassing creditor phone calls and garnishments

The Private Attorney Involvement program and administrative offices are located in the Duluth office.

Eligibility

Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Itasca, Kanabec, Koochiching, Lake, Pine and St. Louis counties. This agency serves people of all ages. Senior Citizens' Law Project: 60 years of age or older. Focuses on those with the most social and economic need.
