Disability and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
DESCRIPTION: [Supplemental Security Income (SSI)](https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/ssi) is a Federal income supplement program designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. [Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)](https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability) provides monthly cash benefits to disabled workers who are fully insured under the program, who are not capable of substantial gainful work and who have completed a five month waiting period. Recipients may qualify for both programs at the same time, if the amount of SSDI benefits awarded are under the SSI income limits.
